The U.S. Craft Spirits Industry Continues Its Stellar Growth

Source: Barron’s

Craft distilling in the United States is no longer a niche industry. It’s a multi-billion juggernaut with nearly 2,000 operating distilleries across the country. Total sales and revenue, market share, investment, and employment are all rapidly on the rise and forecasts are that the trend continues in the years ahead.

For the past several years, the American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) has released an annual report called the Craft Spirits Data Project, putting the industry’s size, growth, and breadth into context. The last report, released in fall of 2018, showed a total of 1,835 active craft distilleries as of last August, up 15.5% from 2017. In the same time span, producers saw a 23.7% growth in retail cases sold, up to 7.2 million, and a 29.9% rise in sales, up to $3.7 billion.

It’s not just craft distillers experiencing growth; large producers are also shining, and it’s part of an overall spirituous American imbibing shift. Think not only of the distilleries you may have in your local region, but to a much larger degree, the staggering number of craft cocktail bars, and consumers’ thirst for premium, limited-edition spirits releases.

National Margarita Day

Today is National Margarita Day! The margarita is a cocktail that consists of tequila, triple sec and lime or lemon juice. It is one of the most common tequila-based cocktails served in the United States.

Margaritas can be served on the rocks (shaken with ice), frozen (blended with ice), or straight up (without ice).

A standard Margarita recipe is :

  • 1 ounce tequila
  • Dash of Triple Sec
  • Juice of 1/2 lime or lemon

Pour over crushed ice, stir.  Rub the rim of a stem glass with rind of lemon or lime, spin in salt—pour, and sip.  (Wikipedia)

Bartender specialists have gotten creative mixing dried herbs, infused sugars and exotic salts to intensify both the flavor of the cocktail and
the presentation of the glass. A few of the more popular flavors include Strawberry Margarita, Mango Margarita, Limeade Margarita, Watermelon Margarita, Pomegranate Margarita, Raspberry Margarita and Blackberry Margarita.

With the 1977 release of Jimmy Buffett’s song “Margaritaville”
margaritas began to grow in popularity.

Pay tribute and honor the margarita on this special day by visiting your favorite distillery, restaurant or just by making your own at home.

Award Winning Sprits!

Led by Cult Bourbons, Distillers Dream of a ‘Napa-fication’ of Kentucky

In September 2014, a bourbon brand called Kentucky Owl began to appear on liquor-store shelves around Louisville. The American whiskey market was booming, and dozens of new bourbons were showing up each year. But Kentucky Owl was different. Released exclusively within the state in tiny quantities and produced by the scion of an old Kentucky whiskey family, it had an undeniable mystique — and a price tag of $170.

To skeptics, Kentucky Owl was proof that the whiskey trend had reached its Tulip Mania moment. At the time, few bourbons commanded even $50 at retail. Plus, the man behind the brand, Dixon Dedman, didn’t even make the whiskey himself; he bought barrels from other distilleries, then blended them. Surely the bubble was about to pop.

Pennsylvania Distilling Company… WOW!!!

Good things come to those who wait.
Making new friends.

It’s hard to believe that this distillery is less than 6 months old. In the tradition of our forefathers they are craft distilling the old fashioned way. Using all natural ingredients and starting from scratch. As they promise, they are “grain-to-glass” and are doing it right every step of the process.

“Anything that saved the human race from extinction is fine by me.” said Benjamin, as he shares his love for spirits. He greets us with a warm and friendly hello. He has a passion for taking what is distilled behind the glass wall and showcases the complex flavors in the cocktails that he has created.

We found that all of their spirits can be enjoyed neat. But, don’t hesitate to experience the well thought out cocktail menu which compliments their creations. First we sampled the First City Vodka which has a mellow corn sweet beginning and a spicy rye finish. Next we moved on to the Founders Artisan Dry Gin that had flavor notes of lemon, lavender and black pepper. The Old City White Whiskey pays homage to folks living on Elfreth’s Alley in Philadelphia. Sweet corn enters the palate and pepper and spice finishes the journey. Our last stop on our Fermented Adventure was the Frontier Explorer’s White Rum. Benjamin lifted the presentation by adding a garnish to each of the samples. This provided a fabulous new dimension. They are hard at work crafting new spirits to add to their already amazing line up.

First Rate Presentation

You most certainly need to put Pennsylvania Distilling Co. on your must list to visit soon. We look forward to getting back really soon. Cheers!

Getting Closer

The Podcast in Full Effect

It’s that moment when you realize, “This is real”. This is really going to be happening. Butterflies… Nausea… Dry Mouth. The car keeps moving forward and the moment is getting closer. I have taken this ride a dozen times to the LAB. I know the landmarks, the traffic lights and where to expect congestion on the road. January 2nd was a different experience. The first episode of the podcast was scheduled to be recorded. Would the computer work? Would the Microphone work? Did I forget anything?

I’m relieved to say that all worked. The 50+ minutes of recording was such an incredible experience. Now on to editing. That has been a whole different leaning process. Setting up the intro, fading in and out of music, and much time spent on YouTube. By next week the Podcast should be loaded onto Anchor, I Tunes and et al. Thanks to everyone that has been patient answering my questions. Let the Fermented Adventure continue. Cheers!

It’s Almost Ready

Fermented Adventure The Podcast

It’s been almost 3 years in the making. We have visited over 100+ Distilleries in 12 states. There were long drives, planes and rental cars. There were times that we got to the distillery to find they were closed for the day for a private party (Note: Yes, we have to call first). Rain, snow, thunderstorms and even skipping meals didn’t keep us from the opportunity to check out some amazing craft distilled spirits. We have met some of the nicest and most genuine down to earth people. Dedicated and inspired. Scientist and geniuses with a still.

It started with the idea for a Facebook site to document our “adventures”. Then came the Instagram page. A few months ago we decided that we wanted to share the stories of the people that we get to meet along the way. The first interview is tomorrow at Liquid Alchemy Beverages or the LAB. You will find the podcast up and running with a week on Anchor and I Tunes and wherever else we can put it. We hope that you enjoy the podcast and it becomes one of your favorites in 2019. Cheers!
