Episode 176 – Springbrook Hollow Farm Distillery – Christian Ryan

This episode feature Christian Ryan of Springbrook Hollow Farm Distillery.

This ten year journey began as a hobby for the founders of Springbrook Hollow Farm Distillery. They are lovers of bourbon and whiskey. The idea of opening a winery didn’t appeal to them as much as starting a distillery. The timing fell in line with New York’s changing its farm distillery laws. Christian came on board three years ago as the head distiller. He has had his hand in brewing since 2007, so the transition to distilling was a comfortable move. They have recently expanded and moved into a new space to give their guests an even more fabulous experience. The added room provided for much needed production and barrel storage area. Springbrook Hollow Farm Distillery offers consumers a chance to experience the flavor and character of the Adirondacks.

Episode 133 – Catoctin Creek Distilling Company – Becky Harris

This episode features Becky Harris of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company .

Becky and Scott founded Catoctin Creek in 2009. At the time there were about 200 distilleries in the United Sates and 6 in Virginia. They began with a vision of making rye whiskey which was “the whiskey” up until prohibition in the Mid-Atlantic States. At Cotoctin they use batch pot still distillation. This is the key to deriving the most flavor from the rye grain. In the beginning it was difficult to get farmers to take a chance on this little craft distillery. Today those farmers are glad that they did. Catoctin produces some of the finest rye whiskey’s. Combine that with the delicious cocktails in the tasting room and you have a recipe for continued growth and success. We enjoyed our fascinating conversation about history, the spirits industry and Catoctin Creek Distilling.

Episode 108 – Redwood Empire Whiskey – Lauren Patz

This episode features Lauren Patz of Redwood Empire Whiskey.

The story begins not with whiskey but, with wine.  Derek Benham started a wine company over 20 years ago.  He built the brand and sold it in 2013.  He then set his sights on starting a distillery.  White spirits flowed from the still and they began laying down barrels in 2015.  Redwood Empire is located in the heart of Sonoma, California.  Lauren grew up in a wine making family.  Her journey into distilling started with the study of history (Not the history of spirits)  and she learned how to make candy while in Japan.  It was when she was pairing chocolate and spirits that it opened her world to spirits.  Learn more about the amazing whiskeys that Redwood is producing and we are certain that you’re sure to become a huge fan too.  It will be love at first sip.

American Whiskey Convention 2021 – Part 1

Finally, the 16 month wait was over. The American Whiskey Convention 2021 was a major success. With over 250 whiskeys and bourbons to sample it was a hard decision on where to start. We got to meet and speak to some incredible people in the industry. Guests shared their observations on what their favorite picks were and who stood out as a surprise.

The theme this year was Whiskey on the Water and it was hosted by the Independence Seaport Museum. There were master distillers and experts on hand to share the latest stories and philosophies about all things whiskey. Discussion forums focused on the grain. The Convention was created by the Delaware Valley Fields Foundation in 2016. It pays homage to the farmers and those caretakers of the grains that we all love so much. Laura Fields worked tirelessly this year to make sure that the event was compliant with local covid rules. The event is an opportunity for novices and experienced whiskey aficionados alike to enjoy their own experience. The people that we spoke to came away with a fantastic experience. There is so much to see and do that you can’t possibly do it all in one evening.
