Episode 148 – Liberty Pole Spirits Grand Opening

This special episode features ⁠Jim⁠, ⁠Ellen⁠, Rob and ⁠Kevin Hough⁠ of ⁠Liberty Pole Spirits⁠.

On July 15th Liberty Pole Spirits entered a new chapter in the history of their whiskey distillery. Friends, family and new fans joined the celebration and filled their new campus to capacity. It was an amazing experience to be part of the festivities and tour this state of the art distillery. The crowned jewel is the largest rickhouse in all of Pennsylvania. This expansive structure provides so much room now to fill and age barrels.

The tasting room and bottle shop are full of history which is befitting to the distilled spirits that are being produced. It’s a comfortable space to sit, relax, sip and enjoy the sights, sounds and the conversations all around. The cocktails are amazing. A perfect balanced and well rounded compliment to the base whiskey being used. We got see the production space from the seating area overlooking the distillery itself.

⁠Episode 31⁠ featured Jim and there you can learn about the history and the humble beginnings of Liberty Pole. This episode provides a glimpse into the excitement of opening day, the experiences leading up to it and some never told stories about the beginning of the distillery.

This is certainly a destination that must be on your bucket list.

Episode 133 – Catoctin Creek Distilling Company – Becky Harris

This episode features ⁠⁠Becky Harris⁠⁠ of ⁠⁠Catoctin Creek Distilling Company⁠ ⁠.

Becky and Scott founded Catoctin Creek in 2009. At the time there were about 200 distilleries in the United Sates and 6 in Virginia. They began with a vision of making rye whiskey which was “the whiskey” up until prohibition in the Mid-Atlantic States. At Cotoctin they use batch pot still distillation. This is the key to deriving the most flavor from the rye grain. In the beginning it was difficult to get farmers to take a chance on this little craft distillery. Today those farmers are glad that they did. Catoctin produces some of the finest rye whiskey’s. Combine that with the delicious cocktails in the tasting room and you have a recipe for continued growth and success. We enjoyed our fascinating conversation about history, the spirits industry and Catoctin Creek Distilling.

Episode 131 – Widow’s Peak Distilling Company – Josh Douglas

This episode features Josh Douglas of Widow’s Peak Distilling Company.

Mike and Mark Ilg were on a ski trip when they devised a plan for a distillery. Mark had been an avid home brewer for 15 years so the challenge of distilling intrigued him. 2 weeks later, after reading a book, he professed to Mike that he was ready to distill vodka. They set up shop distilling their spirits in Peach Bottom, PA. The doors to the cocktail bar and tasting room opened in Ambler, PA in July of 2022. What you will discover here are spirits layered with flavor and a nuanced sipping experience. They provide a wide variety of cocktails to highlight they’re handcrafted in PA spirits.

Episode 76 – West Overton Distilling – Aleasha Monroe and Sam Komlenic

This episode features Aleasha Monroe and Sam Komlenic of West Overton Distilling.

Some familiar and many not so familiar faces filled the large room at West Overton Museum. The sold out crowd of over 100 people showed up to talk, drink and learn about rye whiskey. More specifically Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey was the focus and topic of conversation. The distinguished panel included: David Wondrich who is widely hailed as one of the world’s foremost authorities on the history of the cocktail and one of the founders of the modern craft cocktail movement. Lew Bryson who is currently a Senior Drinks Writer for The Daily Beast, and is also a columnist for Craft Spirits magazine. He is the author of Tasting Whiskey. Steve Bashore who is the Director of Historic Trades and head distiller at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Sam Komlenic who has been the copy editor for Whisky Advocate magazine for 15 years, led and navigated the evening’s discussion. Old Overholt Bonded Straight Rye Whiskey welcomed all in attendance. Aleasha Monroe, head distiller, was introduced to the crowd. As dinner was served talk began of the history of whiskey and more particularly rye whiskey in Pennsylvania. For almost an hour an a half thoughts and facts were exchanged. Breaks were taken to toast the featured rye whiskeys from throughout the state. First Liberty Pole Rye Whiskey, followed by Stoll and Wolfe Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey and then Dad’s Hat Monogahela Rye Whiskey. For the first time West Overton Distilling Monogahela Rye Whiskey was tasted. The discussion got the most heated on the topic of what defines the Monoghahela style or brand.
