The idea for BOTLD came during covid. Andrew was running ⁠Philadelphia Distilling⁠. The ⁠PLCB⁠ was closed for 12 weeks during the lockdown. That was their number one purchaser of ⁠Bluecoat American Dry Gin⁠. They quickly pivoted to direct to consumer sales. This practice became a huge success. Today BOTLD’s mission is to bring a more adventurous, wider, deeper selection of spirits to consumers, as well as, bars and restaurants. They curate brands and spirits that can’t get into the PLCB. Episode 156 – Keeper’s Heart Whiskey – Pip Hanson

This episode features ⁠Pip Hanson⁠ of ⁠Keeper’s Heart Whiskey⁠.

Keeper’s Heart was created at an O’Shaughnessy, Irish American family reunion in Minneapolis five years ago. The O’Shaughnessy’s came to America during the potato famine. The reunion brought the family together to reminisce and converse over whiskey. The idea to start a distillery sprang to life. This family endeavor would pay homage to the ideals and traditions of their immigrant roots. Today a 30,000 square foot distillery, restaurant and bar has come to fruition. Brian Nation was brought onboard to be the head distiller and blender. Steps were taken to source the finest whisky from their favorite distilleries in Ireland and the United States. The plan is to continue to source their flagships and today they are laying down their own juice which is distilled in copper pot stills. Look for those iterations to please consumers in about two years. Pip is responsible for the bar, cocktail program and training. What you’ll find when you visit are three different bars and full kitchen for your enjoyment of this incredible whiskey brand.

Spearhead Whisky is a 100% single grain malted barley which is distilled in a coffey style still. Finished in ex-bourbon barrels and then the liquid spends time in infrared toasted virgin American oak barrels. This creates a spirit that is sweet, light and super approachable for a Scotch whisky. Calum came to Loch Lomond distillery in 2019 as head of innovation. His desire was to introduce new consumers in the brand. This whisky is definitely spearheading a movement. They are doing things differently. Creating new fans one at a time. Pick up your own bottle or order it at the bar. Either neat or as a cocktail. This may become your new favorite and everyday drinker.

Bar Convent Brooklyn was back in Industry City for 2023. This years event was expanded to occupy more space. The booths and activations were bigger and even better. BCB is a party where business gets done. 4,500 industry professionals attended over 2 days. There were 198 brands represented and visitors came from 51 countries and 46 states. 475,000 spirit samples were enjoyed. 5 Friends in a sauna were passing around a bottle of U.S. Rye Whiskey. They started to ask themselves… “Why isn’t anybody making whiskey out of Rye in Finland?” The idea stuck and they began reaching out to those in the distilling industry to help and to determine if this was a viable concept. Two and a half years later found them opening Kyrö Distillery Company. Today they see themselves as pioneers in the rye whisky space. Since opening they have won the best gin for a gin & tonic at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London. This episode features Amanda Beckwith of Virginia Distillery Company.

Dr. George G. Moore was an Irishman who came to the United States in the 1970’s. He loved collecting and drinking single malt whisky’s. In 2011 the dream of a distillery began to become a reality. In 2013 George’s son Gareth took over the reigns when his father passed away. Today, Virginia Distillery Company has been distilling and aging for over seven years. Amanda came on board in 2015 to launch the tour and tasting program. Her knowledge of whisky making quickly grew. Amanda discovered that she had an amazing ability to nose and taste whisky. Today, as master blender, she has taken the lead on their single malt “Courage & Conviction” release. We got to share Amanda’s perspective on the juice that the team is producing. We have to say that what they are producing is sensational. Their New American Single Malt is a feast for the senses.

Dave co-founded Redemption Rye in 2010. In 2015 he sold the company and within a short time he started Proof and Wood. Presently he doesn’t distill, however, he does source some incredible whiskey and barrel aged spirits. A huge part of what they do is blending of whiskey. The have recently added rum to the mix. Dave’s been developing boutique craft brands for over 20 years. The Proof and Wood library includes international whisky too. Dave’s experience in the beverage industry and working in bars shines through on the expressions that he has created.

In 2018 BCB was launched. In 2022 BCB celebrated it’s new Brooklyn home at Industry City.

Bar Convent Brooklyn took place on June 14th and 15th. Over 3,700 attended the event over a 2 day span. The event provided an amazing opportunity for the bartending and spirits industry to come together and network, see new products, and discover the latest trends. 136 booths offered something for everyone. Featuring… spirits, liquors, aperitifs, ready to drink cocktails, barware and mixers. The education offerings highlighted over 3 dozen classes that provided a wide variety of information. Glen Moray Distillery has been in operation, off and on, since 1897. The distillery originated out of the Elgin West Brewery in the heart of Speyside. In the early 1900’s they were “mellowing” whisky in Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc barrels. The philosophy of experimenting with cask finishes still exists today. 120 plus years of experience resonates in the amazing whisky that is being produced. This Speyside style whisky provides a depth of flavor and character. Brenden shares the rich history of Glen Moray. He takes us on a tasting journey and shares his insight and knowledge of the expressions that we had the pleasure to enjoy.
